Sir

I am favoured with your very Obliging Letter
of the 19th. & think myself much indebted to You for Your kind
attention, Secrecy, & delicacy, in this Affair. ---

In answer to Your Queries. In about 2 days after the Supposed
infection, there was a heat in the Urine, and a pain in the
Loins, which also affected the testicles a little. with a pain in
the Yard, & an inclination to make water, but by takeing
Several doses of Salts & Manna (it might have been prevented
coming the length of any running. --- It might have been a
Month or better before the pains affected the Shoulders or Joints
I never had any other of the Symptoms you Mention, No
running, eruption, or Chancre. having ever appeared.
a Small Gleet of thin Watry humour. Sometimes indeed making
its appearance Still (on Improper ideas) but at no other
time. -

The quantity of Mercurial Ointment might be about the full
of a TeaSpoon. This was rubbed in the Loins, inside of the
thighs, & Shoulders, at Night when going to bed, and
wiped off in the morning again, at which time I have
Kept the House --- & I never felt the Effects of it in my
mouth. -- but when I took one Mercurial pill about the Size

of a Small pea. Inwardly. or 1½ pill which I did sometimes
for a Space of time not exceeding 3 or 4 Nights. It brought
gripes, & sometimes an Inclination to Spit, which did not
continue ---

My reason for thinking these pains Venereal, is, that
I never had them before that time. I mentiond, & they
sometimes seemed to Give way to Mercury --

I feel temperance, & Exercise considerably abate them
& when obliged to drink, or be in Company. or be Exposed
to Cold, they generally grow worse ---

& the Methods I may have taken at first may have
circulated the Infection More through my blood, & prevented
the Usual appearances. --

Since writing first - I put a small blister on the pit
of the Stomach
which seemes a good deal to have Removed
the pains in my breast -- If on this information any
Regimen or Medicine, can be advised that may Remove
it out of the blood & prevent Return, I shall Steadily
follow your directions, and am much obliged to You
for the Liberty to Correspond, in Case a further explan¬
ation should be wanted -- I hope the Symptoms I
have described will not communicate by Infection,

Means, in 4 weeks hence, -- of which I am Anxious
to hear -- Please address as before, to ly till Called
for. I am with much Respect & Esteem
