Lieutt. Waddell.
Dear Sir

I have now considered Lieutt. Waddels
Case as fully and attentively as I can and tho from its causes
and continuance it must be obstinate and difficult, I dont des¬
pair of being of service to him. The Remedy I depend upon is mo¬
derate sweating by Dovers powder. I would begin with a dose of
twenty grains given in the morning and with as little heat as may
be a moderate sweating carried on for ten twelve hours and if this
succeeds tolerably I would repeat it with an interval of two days
for two or three times but I would wish to have a report of the
first trial. He must on the intermediate days keep close in the
house and even there take care to avoid cold. If the weather is
should prove very frosty & cold I would even delay the first trial
till you should have some tolerably mild weather. For the whole
of the conduct of this matter I dare say you are sufficiently in¬
structed and if you have any doubts or questions to put I shall
be ready to answer them. Besides the sweating even before he
begins it let him take every night at bedtime fifty drops of the
Elixir guaiacina volatilis
The best method of taking it is dropped on

a little powdered sugar and after it is stirred among that stirred
in a little water and swallowed, and this he is to continue to do on
the days intermediate of the sweatings. I have no other medicine
to propose at present but the following Electuary to be taken when
costiveness requires

Take an ounce each of Crystal Tartar and Lenitive Electuary, an ounce and a half of powdered, compounded Jallop and a sufficient quantity of Simple Syrup to make an Electuary or a thin Linctus. Two teaspoonfuls, more or less, to be taken for a dose.

With all this let him take a middling diet neither full
nor low. He may take two or three glasses of wine or punch
but hardly more. I am certain that Cold is what he ought es¬
pecially to guard against but I shall not be positive that he is
never to employ cold bathing but at present and with the reme¬
dies I propose I am positive that neither bathing nor washing
are any ways allowable. Expecting to hear from you whenever
you have the least thing to say I am
