Dear Sir

I was at Edinburgh abowt Middle last
Month and called several times for you, but was always
so unlucky as Miss you and was told you was in the
Country and after I came home I went immediately
to Peterhead and tryed the Mineral water agreeable
to your desire but found it sitts rather heavy on my
stomach which made me give it up, but I used the Salt
Water Baths Regularly every day, but still finds my
stomach much distressed with Bile which I believe affects
my mind owing to the Crudity and Indesgastion.
I am very certain there has been something Originaly
on my mind for I can comprehend the third heavens
at a thought when my spirit is not cloggd with the
Distress of my Body and my Nerves. I tried [milk?]
I know this is a subject beyond the power of Physick
to reach, but I will endeavour to the utmost of my ability
to answer the purposes of Providence, while I exist here.
I tried Milk conform to your prescription, when I was at
Peterhead for breakfasts deluted with a little water Gruel
but I found it too heavy for my stomach & Digestion
and therfore gave it up. Altho I must say I am a lover
of Milch I cannot say but that I think my appetite
rather mended for Dinner when the Bile dos not
oppress me, which when it begins to float on my
stomach I am obliged to clear it off by a Vomit

[Page 2]

of which I take a Dose of eight Grains of Emetick Tartar and
yet it never sickens me till I make it come up with my
Finger which yet never strains [me?] which I am astonished at.
I shall be happy to hear from you as I put a Great Confidence
in your superior Judgement and in the Meantime I take the
Liberty to send you a Copy of my Late publication on the
Nervous System 1 will ↑be↑ fond if ↑it↑ meets your approbation.
I did it purely for my own amusement and only threw off
a very few Copies for my particular Friends, at the earnest
