Doctor Cullen
Sir,

By the method of Treatment you
laid down for my Complaint, & by perseverance in
the medicines, I find myself pretty relieved. --

The severe Pain has never returned since I began
with the medicines- My Appetite is good, my Belly
regular, having an easy Stool once a Day, & My princi¬
pal present Complaint is in the left umbilical
Region
(as the Dr. Terms it) from whence I imagined
was the first discharge of Blood in August 1779
& where I have felt a soreness ever since- When
I sit at ease now for 10 minutes or longer, there
is a sensible [heat?], Uneasiness & Palpitation
at that Part
, which goes off by motion in a just
measure- but the the soreness still remains.----

Mr. Ballentine, my Apothecary examined
my stools, says they are mixed with a purulent
matter
& wishes to administer me the Peruvian
Bark
along with the Powders, but I could not
think of pursueing his Plan, untill I had
your Authority and Approbation for

so doing- He likewise mentioned an Issue but
near the Part being of service- I blush- Sir, at
the thoughts of troubling you again without
a Reward ↑tho you desired it↑- Nor should I have presumed it-
had not your Behaviour to me when in your
Presence, convinced me, that your Practice
is regulated by motives of Humanity as
well as Interest- When my Circumstance
with my Health are better, I hope, Gratitude
will remember to repay- If- Sir, {illeg}
find a Leisure moment to [-consider?] {illeg}
and notify it by Letter how far Mr Ballentine's
Plan may seem to you proper - it will be an
additional favour conferred upon

Sir, your already
much obliged & h
& humble Servant
