Doctor Cullen,
Dear Sir,


Mc:Dowal saw you last, he has been ↑since [Inst:?]↑ 1 mostly
rideing about on Account of Business, & has
not been more than 6 Days at a time in
this place, he has therefor not had it in his
power to go on with a proper Course of
the pectoral Pills you last recommended
or to have any more of the Decoctum Tussilago
& Parietariœ as you before ordered. --- But
has had no threatenings of the Hæmoptoe
& has been rather gathering more Strength
of late. Tho he complains much of an obsti¬
nate Costiveness
↑a Disposition to↑ which seems to be every Day
encreasing upon him. -- The Pills you

last ordered, as well as the former Electuary
after using two or three Times lost their
Effects & were obliged to be used in such large
Doses to produce a proper Effect that thay
became very inconvenient & even then
uncertain, so that I was obliged to have recour[se]
again to the Castor Oil (Made into an Emul¬
sion)
which has always been as yet effectual
But this again he complains of as lying
heavy on his Stomach. ---


He at present attributes all his
Complaints to his Costive habit, & from ta¬
king a Retrospect of his former Complaint
I am apt to believe it has acted in these, always
as a Strong Occasional Cause if not as a
prædisposing one also. -- For in the Dange¬

rous Complaint of his Bowells that attacked him
some year's ago in the troublesome Cutane¬
ous
Eruption ↑that he had↑ & his late pectoral Com¬
plaints
, Constipation was always one
of the most troublesome Symptoms. -
For farther particulars I must refers
you to himself as this go's along with him {illeg}
& believe me to be with Respect &
