Sir

This will be delivered you by Mr John Brodie
of this place, whose occasion of calling upon you is to consult
you upon his own Case --- His present Complaints
you will have an Opportunity of knowing from himself
better than I can inform you - I presume all his Com¬
plaints arise from the Gout not fixing upon any of the
Extremities as formerly but attacking the Stomach & other
viscera - For several years past Mr Brodie has been
attacked with that Disease in his hands or feet about the
Spring or Summer Season which always continued some time
& went off gradually - last year he was seized with the
Gout as usual, but was more Mobile & did not continue
the usual time in the Extremities, he had at two different
times a violent attack of it in his Stomach, particularly
one in the Month of August - All this Season he has
had no attack of the Gout in his Extremities unless a pain
at a time which continues at longest but a few hours

[Page 2]

Perhaps this mobile & Atonic appearance which the disease
has put on for these two years past may be owing to a fall
he received about the beginning of the year 1777 by which
his head was much contused and about eight days after the
fall in consequence of the Contusion he was seized with an
Erysepelas all over his head & face which made the frequent
repetition of Blooding & purgatives indispensably necessary
The Medicines which have been employed are those which
tend to strengthen the System in General & Stomach in parti¬
cular as Bitters & Bark, at the same time gentle means
have been used to bring the Disease to the Extremities as
pedeluvium twice a week & frictions a Blister was also
applied to the region of the Stomach on friday last ---
His Diet is chiefly nourishing & Solid, he takes a glass of
wine after & between meals --

Mr Brodie has been thro' the whole of his Life a very active
and Laborious Man, about fifteen years ago and for
several years before that period he was much exposed
to Company in the way of his Business & took his Glass
very freely but of late years he has been very moderate
in that way, perhaps the change has been rather sudden

[Page 3]

Hoping to hear from you soon & that your prescriptions
and Directions (which shall be punctually obeyed) will have
a Salutary effect -

I ever am
Sir
your most humble Servant
