Kirkcaldy 24 September 1777
Sir


I have just now had the pleasure of receiving your
Letter & am exceedingly happy to have your appro¬
bation of my Conduct with respect to Miss Aytoun.


The Blister which has been kept open on her Breast
for some little time shall immediatly be healed up
& we shall apply one betwixt her shoulders.


The taking blood from the Arm I shall take the
liberty to put off till you are pleased to give
further orders. The changes Miss Aytoun has
gone through & manner she has been treated ↑since my last↑ you
will find below I am with the highest Respect
& Esteem dear Sir

Monday 22. Pulse 90. Looseness gone but she complains of

gripes about the lower part of her Belly. Ankles & feet
very cold – Vomits her food & ass's milk – The Anodyne
Draught
with xxx Drops is to be repeated


23. Slept about two hours in the night; gripes very
severe
& she complains of Convulsive startings – Pain
at breast & Dyspnœa not so constant but at times
more severe than ever – thirst excessive, vomiting
continues
– has a gentle moisture all over her skin.
Debility so great that she can with difficulty raise
herself up in bed – has no stool since Sunday.
She is to have a Common Injection & Bladders
filled with warm water are to be applied
to her Belly.
Anodyne to be repeated with forty Drops.

24 Slept almost none in the nightskin very hot & dry.
Dyspnœa & pain at breast at present [well?] easy tho' she
says they were both very troublesome in the night.
Gripes continue. Vomiting gone – thirst excessive
her drink is common water acidulated with the
juice of a Lemon
she Nauseates every kind of

food
& every day she becomes more feeblePulse about 90.
She has taken some Butter milk today but the
ass's milk she cannot taste.


The Anodyne is to be repeated with fifty Drops.
