For Mrs Beattie

Mrs Beattie's stomach has been originally weak & has
now remained for a long time more remarkably affected,
so that it may be difficult to restore it entirely but I hope
it may be much mended & the uneasiness in her throat & back
may be ↑very↑ entirely relieved.

For this purpose I hope ordered below a medecine which
I hope will strengthen her stomach & her whole Body.
It may be continued for a fortnight at one time & then to be
laid aside but after some interval she may return to it
again for a week or two & this sooner or later according to
the effects percieved from the medecine & the urgency of her
complaints.

For relieving her throat I have ordered also a
medecine below. It is a powder of which she is to take a
small tea spoonful at a time & lay it upon her tongue
[s]o that it may melt by degrees & be swallowed leisurely.
This she may do two or three times a day more or less fre¬
quently as the heat & soreness of her throat is more or
less troublesome. When her throat is tolerably easy she
should let this medecine alone that it may not grow
usefuseless by too frequent repetition.

[Page 2]

I am of opinion that the pain between her
shoulders
will be very much relieved by a blister put
upon the part.

With these remedies Mrs Beattie's chief care should (↑must↑) be
to avoid Cold especially about her neck & throat.

It will be also necessary for her to give some atten¬
tion to Diet but her own Experience in this matter
will should direct her better than I can do. I am of o¬
pinion that it would be better both for her throat &
stomach if she could by degrees reconcile herself to solid food.

With due precautions against Cold I am persuaded
she will always be the better for being much in the
fresh air & in gentle Exercise especially on horseback
when the weather will allow or in a carriage when
the weather is uncertain.

For Mrs Beatie

Take a scruple (↑half a drachm↑) of prepared Powdered Steel, 2 scruples (↑a drachm↑) of Cinnamon, and 3 drachms of white Sugar. Mix thoroughly and divide into fourteen doses. Label: Signa Stomachic Powders t one to be made into a soft Bolus with Rose Conserve & taken twice a day about an hour before dinner & supper.

[Page 3]

Take a drachm of Salts of nitre, 2 drachms of white Sugar, and an ounce of powdered Gum arabic. Mix thoroughly to make a powder. Label: Cooling Powders a small tea spoonful for a dose.
