Dumfries November 30th 1775
Sir

After waiting some time to observe
the consequences of your advice and Prescription
for my Mother – I now beg leave to inform
you of the present state of her health

For a considerable time after she came
home she appeared to be getting better daily
the Cough was much abated the Pain in her
Breast and side totally left her and her appetite
tolerably good
your Directions were puntually
adhered to except her taking the Journey
which she could not do conveniently but
when the Weather would allow went frequently
out in a carriage a few miles – the Blister
which was applied to
her side discharged
pretty well for some weeks. When it stoped
I proposed the seton which she would not
consent to – Issues were put in her arm
but discharg’d little or none – About 10 days
ago she complained of an acute pain under
her left Breast attended with a constant cough.
Leeches were applied by which she soon found
ease – The Cough still continues very severe

and frequent which perhaps may be partly
owing to a new Cold as Colds here are very
common
and almost Epidemical I have been
oblig’d to give her ↑an↑ anodyne with the Vin. Emet.
at Bedtime frequently the Cough being so severe
She is much thinner and weaker since
the 20th of this month – Her Pulse is 82
not very full
. Pray answer as soon as Possible
as I am much afraid of her will much
obligd

Sir
your most respectful and
obedient humble servant

Notes:

1: Such comments usually indicate that a brief note has been made somewhere on the incoming letter (rather than in a casebook) of what Cullen advised, but in this instance no such note is evident.
