The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

[ID:1109] From: Mr Joseph Sanderson / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Mr Joseph Sanderson (Patient) / 15 January 1775 / (Incoming)

Letter from Joseph Sanderson in Gatesgill, regarding his own case, confirming that Cullen's earlier prescription has been strengthening his stomach but reporting that he now has an 'itch' on his hands which he believes he caught 'by laying with a person' (though this does not imply any sexual contact, since bed-sharing was a common practice, especially when staying at inns). He sends payment of a guinea.

I Received your favor of the 16th. November last and has
taken its contain'd Prescription which I've found benefit
from by strengthening my stomach I was my self
sometimes in the tempred water which you prescrib'd
for me, and think I've Received benefit from that Application
likewise, but stil my Body continues extremely weak
tho' my stomach is much Better. I was about a
fortnight ago affected with the Itch or some Species
of Eruption When I was first affected my skin Itch'd
much then small watery Pustles Especialy betwixt
my fingers
and in the wrists of my hands the Pustles
now grow larger and appear like little Boils containin↑g↑
white matter.
Since I've been affected with kind of Itch
I've perspired a great deal more and frequently
had little Swetts
at a certain time in the mornings
in Bed if I get up it prevents it. I ride out frequently
on Horseback when the weather is

[Page 2]

Seasonable and uses as much Exercise otherwise
as I'm capable of; since I've been affected with the Itch
ive found no particular alterations in regard to my strength
I'm allmost shure I got this sort of Itch by Laying with a person
who had it therefore I think I've taken the Itch Epidemicaly not
naturally. Shal beg an Answer as soon as Opportune
Informing me whether you think the Itch shud be prevented
or not and of anything else you think necessary for my
