For Mrs. Close of Lisborn

As Mrs. Close's Ailments have been of pretty long
standing they are now more difficult to be removed but I hope that
with a little attention and pains they may be entirely Cured.

The remedies already employed were the most probable
that could be thought of and if they have not entirely removed
her Complaints they have contributed to her general health and I hope
disposed her Ailments to be more easily mended.

On a paper apart I have prescribed an Artificial Harrowgate
water
of which she should take a Dose twice a week or oftener
if Costiveness requires it. The dose may be a Table Spoonful &
the effect of this should be to give one free stool, but if it does either
more or less, the dose should be diminished or increased. The Dose
must be always taken mixed with half a pint of Spring water
& this taken at two draughts in the Morning before breakfast.
It may be proper to warm so much of the water as to take off the
Coldness of the whole.

For Strengthening the Stomach and the Nerves in general
I prescribed some powders and an Infusion which as soon as
Mrs. Close is settled at home she may begin to take and may
take them for a fortnight together. After that they are to be laid
aside for a week or two, but a second Course may be again
entered upon sooner or later as the effects of the former Course &
the state of her Symptoms direct.

For relieving the uneasiness which Mrs. Close is affected
with after Dinner let her take 50 or 60 drops of the Stomachic
Elixir also prescribed on the paper apart. They are to be taken
not in any liquid but dropped on a bit of Tea Sugar & washed
down with a mouthful or two of Brandy & water.

When Mrrs. Close happens to be seized with the Spasm
of her stomach, let her in the first place try a dose of the

[Page 2]

same Stomachic Elixir but if that does not give immediate relief
or if the relief obtained by it does not continue, she must have recourse
to the Paregoric Elixir or Laudanum in the manner her former
experience has directed.

It will certainly contribute to Mrs. Closes health
to take a great deal of fresh air & gentle exercise & her late
journey was very properly advised. I hope it has done service &
tho' not so much as was wished, I must advise her to continue
to take some exercise on horseback or in a Carriage as frequently
as the Weather will easily allow.

It is of much consequence for Mrs. Close to attend
to her Diet, but she seems already to have had very proper
advice on this subject, & her own experience must have given
her the best directions, so that it is not necessary for me
to enter upon it here.
