Letter from Charles Brown concerning the case of General Beckwith, a 66-year-old veteran of the Seven Years' War, in which he served under Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick. He now lives in Northumberland. He used to keep a pack of hounds, but now is suffering from 'a kind of Rheumatic Gout' and the gravel. He has also suffered 'great dejection of mind in short he has lost all his Phylosophy', and secretly takes laudanum at night. Brown describes the various medicines he has employed, and has recommended that Beckwith use a 'spring chair' for exercise. 15 October 1787

Cullen recommends the use of Falconer's 'alkaline mephitic water', but writes, 'You will judge of the use of the spring chair by the effects, but I hardly ever find exercise of any kind agree with Nephritics'. The young man is 'very deaf', so Brown has asked him also to consult Cullen about his hearing. 21 October 1787
